Shopping mania hits the city with summer sales starting this month. Every mall, every shop and every brand’s outlet is labeled with flashy banners and attention-grabbing pamphlets along with attractive ads in every magazine, newspaper and channel. With sales, start the endless visits of customers to every outlet of the city. Be it the local shop of your area or an international’s brand’s outlet in Xinhua Mall, Gulberg; every shop is bursting with customers.

Stepping into Nishat Linen, Defence on the first day of the sale, was an experience of a life time. The not-so-large basement of the shop was crowded like narrow streets of old Anarkali, with all the aunties and girls grabbing one dress after the other and shouting to the salesmen to deal them first.

Now days everyone just needs an excuse to go shopping and buy something new. These sales are just another excuse for all the shopaholics out there to go shopping. Shopping is the new hobby of everyone, today. It is the new way of socializing with friends. Talking about second opinions on whether what you buying is good or not, the second opinion of friends are welcomed rather than of parents. Shopping with friends is the current fashion!

Shopping is my way of relieving tension, says Mehreen Mehmood , a 22 year old graduate. ‘Whenever I am stressed or tired of the ongoing troubles in my life I go out shopping.’ This is the new explanation of today’s youth for their shopping mania. Shopping tends to have numerous effects on one’s life. Getting out of your house or away from the daily routine and indulging your mind in shopping tends to be beneficial for many people.

The desire to look trendy, fashionable and up-to-date with the latest fashion has sparked this new obsession with shopping. Not just youngsters, adults are also a part of this obsession and are equally enthusiastic about buying new things. This desire is not just limited to items like clothes, shoes, bags etc., it extends upto household and a variety of other stuff. Females have to have the new style curtains in their drawing room with the black color couch and it’s essential for men to have the new style lighter and a cool wallet along with the latest cell phone in their pockets.

Apart from that, teenage girls must be wearing a top from the latest collection at Cross Roads or Stone Age and boys should have the perfect canvases to go with their attire. Everyone has to look modish and carry an attire which matches their cool personality and as a result earns them appreciation from their peers. Teenage girls are often seen talking about the new lip gloss of L’Oreal and boys are chatting about the latest Nokia cell phones. This style-conscious attitude and the so-called social-norm forces everyone in the practice of this never-ending craze of shopping. The desire to win attention has grabbed every young adult, and this desire leads them on the path of extensive shopping!

Gone are the days when guys blamed girls for their endless shopping lists. Today guys are akin to females’ obsession with shopping. They, too, want to have just the right T-Shirt for the function at night, which is always missing from their wardrobes and their collection of footwear never has the ideal shoes which would go with the occasion and their outfit. ‘My fiancĂ©’ is never satisfied with his wardrobe’, discusses Ammara Riasat, a trainee at Nishat Linen, ‘and is always rushing to Nike or Amir Bilal to buy new clothes whenever there is a party. And his thirst for electronic gadgets is unquenchable. He buys new gadgets like I buy new clothes. A new gadget in market is the number one item in his shopping list.’

Shopping has turned out to be an addiction for many. Some people are no longer in control of themselves when shopping. These folks end up with handfuls of shopping bags which their two arms are unable to carry to the car. They are victims of compulsive buying. These shoppers end up buying a lot of unnecessary items. Their addiction is no less than a chocoholic’s craving for chocolate; no doubt they are called shopaholics!

The ‘fashion freak’ attitude of people today is cashed by every business minded person. All the brands take full advantage of this fad, and not just brands even the local road side merchants, sell up-to-date products by imitating branded products. A Rs.2000 dress of Gul Ahmad is available for Rs 1000 in Liberty Market without the label of the brand; a Rs 500 earring from Haroon’s is available in Rs. 300 and a Rs. 3000 canvas is available in Rs.700-Rs.1000 in local non-branded shops.

This craze, good or bad, has gripped youngsters and adults everywhere. And with everyone ready to buy every new item in the market, parents better look after your soaring monthly budgets!
